A Note From GFMA's Executive Director, Sagdrina Jalal: New Fellowship Program!
Happy July! This past month, GFMA has been busy working on several projects, including Fresh Stop Market, Nourish, and our new fellowship! The Farmers Market Leaders Fellowship will launch this fall in partnership with Wholesome Wave Georgia. This program aims to teach market managers valuable skills and knowledge that will help improve the long term sustainability of their markets, as well as provide various strategies to bolster community engagement.
As farmers markets continue to grow throughout Georgia, we strive to improve the experience of everyone in making the farmers market possible – the vendors, the consumers, and the leadership involved with putting the market together. We decided by targeting management of the market, the overall quality and essence of farmers markets could drastically improve.
The program will be administered in both webinar sessions and several in-person sessions. The session dates will be available at the beginning of the program to ensure timely scheduling to plan on attending. Every session will have a pre-planned topic of discussion and expert speaker, which will be posted in advance as well.
Through this program, many aspects of managing a market will be discussed, including areas one may not necessarily associate with running a successful farmers market. By giving farmers market managers the tools, resources, and support needed to succeed, we can help increase awareness and education on the importance and significance of a local food systems in one’s community. The program will be selecting 10 Fellows, and each Fellow will be given a stipend of either $2400 for those less than 100 miles away or $2600 for those more than 100 miles away. There is a $200 stipend difference to offset transportation costs for the in-person meetings.
